A dear loved one is having a total Hip Replacement surgery. Immediately my mind goes into overdrive. What can I create with love to assist in her new journey? I’d like to provide a way for her to safely carry a few items while she’s in the healing process. Come to think of it, these Placemat walker bags would also be great for senior homes!

Then my mind goes ding ding ding! I instantly recall a wonderful convo my Mom and I had some time ago about how fantastic walker bags are and how you can personalize each one. And their EASY Peasy!
I ended up making her two walker bags. The placemat one is just a fine example of what you can create with very little money and time. The second one will be in my next blog post. I made that one with home decorating fabric and a slightly different design. Once I post it I’ll add a link here so you can see it as well.
Let’s make one! Here are the easy steps…

Material (Placemat)

Supplies for Placemat Walker Bag
- Placemat – Suggested size 19″ X 13″
- Ribbons – to tie bag to walker
- Optional – Buttons for detail
- Thread
Tools
Gathering Supplies
Fold Placemat as seen below and leave a 2″ gap from top and clip. I wanted the flower portion to be the pockets for the walker bag.
I cut my ribbon for the ties at 16-20″ each (2 total) folded in half and clipped into a V shape. These ribbons will tie the bag to the walker.

Lets Begin!
Use sewing machine to stitch the two dotted lines shown below

Mark Centerline with Blue tape…

Be sure to put a few extra stitches in the top inch to re-enforce area for strength.
Please note, I added 2 buttons sewn by hand. In addition, it also hides the stitches from sewing the ribbon to the placemat. I believe it added some nice easy detail as well.
Can you imagine with all the nice variety of placemats out there how easy these are to create? The placemat I picked up was just from an Ace Hardware store. This would be a great beginner sewing project and donate them to Rest Homes or Senior Centers.
Bonus Tip: You have the ability to sew your pocket lines in any size you like.

What great idea.
Thank you! I am so happy you like it ♥
I love the idea of your walker bag! When you need both hands to get around with the walker, there’s always a need to carry “stuff” with you from one place to another! It’s so helpful to have clear instructions on how to make one! Thanks! 👍
Lori, Thank you so much! I am thrilled you love the idea!♥
Thank you for this great and simple idea. I work in a Day Centre for the elderly and can see myself making quite a few of these.
Hi KJ, Bless you for the work you do! I will be adding a video tutorial soon to this post…stay tuned!
